Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: an epidemiological study in Hungary

Takeaway

  • Higher prevalence and incidence of neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorder (NMOSD) were estimated for Hungary compared with other large Caucasian population-based studies.

Why this matters

Previous epidemiological studies have suggested that NMOSD is less frequent in the Caucasian population compared to Asian, African, and Latin American populations. However, there are few epidemiological studies on larger populations of Caucasians and no studies on the Eastern European population. This Hungarian study provides the first epidemiological data on an Eastern European population.
