Neonatal risk morbidities for epilepsy in children born extremely preterm

Takeaway

  • Severe necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), neonatal seizure, and significant neonatal brain injury were independent neonatal risk morbidities for epilepsy. Very preterm children with epilepsy were prone to have neurodevelopmental disability and drug‐resistant epilepsy.

Why this matters

An elevated incidence of epilepsy was identified among very preterm children. As neonatal seizures in preterm infants were identified as a risk factor for epilepsy, there is a clear need to optimize seizure identification through continuous electroencephalographic monitoring to enable proper seizure management.
