Identifying risk factors for post-operative delirium following major surgery in the elderly

Whilst risk of post-operative delirium (POD) has been evaluated in elderly patients undergoing specific types of surgery, researchers from Seoul, South, Korea, performed a study to investigate more general risk factors across 6 different types of major surgery. They found that the greatest independent risk factors were operation type (orthopedic, gastrointestinal, and then cardiac), followed by parkinsonism.
