Diffusion-weighted imaging–positive lesions play a role in small vessel disease progression

Takeaway

  • Diffusion-weighted imaging–positive (DWI+) lesions occur in over 3% of individuals with small vessel disease (SVD) and these evolve into white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in around two-thirds of individuals.

Why this matters

Although DWI+ lesions play a role in SVD progression, they do not explain all progression of SVD markers on MRI. These findings provide a foundation for future high-frequency imaging studies, the results of which could ultimately lead to novels treatments that slow SVD progression.
