Comparing the optic nerve sheath diameter with ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging

Takeaway

  • The absolute measurements of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) using ultrasound imaging were not comparable with measurements using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2 images.

Why this matters

Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is found in various neurological diseases; early detection and treatment has shown to improve the morbidity and mortality. An efficient and reliable method to monitor ICP is necessary as clinical signs for elevated ICP are unreliable. This study illustrates the utility of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) but also demonstrates the need to further examine the technique and probe type.
