Pathological markers of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are associated with relatively low flortaucipir-PET (FTP-PET) standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) in the preclinical phase. Adjustments of tau thresholds should therefore be considered for future research of tau accumulation in preclinical AD.
Why this matters
The pathologic accumulation of tau protein can occur decades before the onset of AD. This report shows that apparently small elevations of FTP retention in presymptomatic patients could be related to ongoing pathologic processes. Subthreshold FTP values therefore require further research and validation by autopsy studies.
